THE ongoing vaccination programme will not be disrupted despite the resignation of Muhyiddin Yassin and his cabinet today as there is a structure already in place, Ong Kian Ming said.

Ong, who is the Selangor coordinator for Operation Surge Capacity of the Covid-19 vaccination programme, said there is a good supply of vaccines for the public for next month too.

“The good news is that the vaccination programme, the base and structure are already there.

“So it will continue even without the minister for now,” he said during a webinar organised by UOB Kay Hian Wealth Advisors this afternoon.

Ong was referring to Khairy Jamaluddin, the coordinating minister of the National Covid-19 Immunisation Programme, who was the first to confirm the cabinet’s resignation via social media.

“I have seen the numbers in terms of the (Covid-19 vaccine) supply for September, and it is actually pretty good,” Ong said.

Ong also urged Malaysians not to worry after reports of four public vaccination centres in Penang closing yesterday due to the shortage of more than 20,000 Pfizer vaccine doses.

“The minister managed to quickly get an agreement with Sinovac to procure vaccines temporarily,” he said.

Unfortunately, Penangites who have taken their first dose of Pfizer will have to wait for their second dose for a few weeks because Malaysia does not have a mix-and-match strategy yet.

“As far as I can see, the supply shortage (in Penang) is only temporary because Pfizer is going through some global shortages,” he said.

Nonetheless, a massive inflow of Pfizer supplies is expected to arrive next month, said Ong, who is also the Bangi MP.

Ong also said more than 85% in the Klang Valley would be fully vaccinated by the end of this month.

“And then by the end of September, the entire country is likely to get about 70% to 80% fully vaccinated,” he said. – August 16, 2021.
