BERSATU leaders met this morning as rumours swirled about the imminent resignation of Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin.

Party president Muhyiddin arrived at the meeting about 9.35am at The Publika in Kuala Lumpur .

Among the early arrivals were Communications and Multimedia Minister Saifuddin Abdullah, Housing and Local Government Minister Zuraidah Kamaruddin and Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Mustapa Mohamad.

Deputy Higher Education Minister Mansor Othman, Deputy Health Minister Dr Noor Azmi Ghazali, and Deputy Transport Minister Kamarudin Jaffar were also there.

Muhyiddin lost the majority in Parliament last week after 14 Umno lawmakers withdrew support for the beleaguered prime minister. Two ministers of the party have also quit the cabinet.

According to the federal constitution, a prime minister who no longer enjoys the confidence of the majority in parliament may either resign or ask the king to dissolve parliament.

Muhyiddin on Friday offered seven reforms in exchange for the support of the opposition to stay in office. He pledged to cap the prime minister’s term in office to two terms, strengthen the various parliamentary selection committees and enforce the law to lower the voting age to 18, among others.

The deal was proposed ahead of a confidence vote scheduled for September 7.

However, his attempt to court the opposition failed as numerous lawmakers issued statements rejecting the offer.

Muhyiddin is believed to only have 100 lawmakers on his side in the 220-seat Parliament.

The prime minister is expected to offer his resignation to the Yang-Pertuan Agong tomorrow. – August 15, 2021.
