A WIDELY watched meeting at the prime minister’s house this afternoon was a Bersatu party management meeting, said party deputy president Ahmad Faizal Azumu amid speculation that Muhyiddin Yassin will resign the top post as early as Monday.

The newly minted special adviser to the prime minister said the meeting was on party matters. He refused to comment further.

“A statement will be issued by the party later today,” said the Bersatu deputy president as he left the prime minister’s residence at 5.45 pm.

Also seen leaving the Prime Minister’s residence were Minister of International Trade and Industry Mohamed Azmin Ali, Women, Family and Community Development Minister Rina Mohd Harun, and Deputy Youth and Sports Minister Wan Ahmad Fayhsal Wan Ahmad Kamal.

The media had gathered outside the residence as rumours swirled that the prime minister is set to quit his position after having lost his numbers in the Dewan Rakyat.

Earlier today, Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Mohd Redzuan Md Yusof said there was no emergency cabinet meeting this afternoon as reported by a news portal.

The Bersatu minister said he had not received any notice on the meeting.

“Up to now, I have not received any notice of such a meeting. Usually, notices are sent to ministers well before any meeting.

“The cabinet had met last week,” he told The Malaysian Insight.

Yesterday, in seeking support, Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin had promised to introduce bills to limit the term of the prime minister and to stop lawmakers from party-hopping.

He also promised equal funding to all MPs for their constituency needs, including those in opposition seats.

Other reforms would be amendments to the relevant laws needed in order to facilitate Undi 18, or the lowering of the voting age from 21 to 18, and to ensure better checks and balances in parliamentary select committees. – August 14, 2021.
