Pejuang chairman Dr Mahathir Mohamad and president Mukhriz Mahathir arriving at Perdana Leadership Foundation for questioning by police over their involvement in a gathering by opposition lawmakers at Dataran Merdeka last Monday. Their lawyers, Mior Nor Haidir Suhaimi and Muhammad Rafique Rashid Ali, said the duo will answer questions in court.

PEJUANG chairman Dr Mahathir Mohamad and president Mukhriz Mahathir will answer all questions on their involvement in the march to Parliament last week in court, said their lawyers.

Their lawyers, Mior Nor Haidir Suhaimi and Muhammad Rafique Rashid Ali, in a statement, said the Langkawi MP and Jerlun MP cooperated when they were questioned by police officers from Bukit Aman this afternoon at the Perdana Leadership Foundation.

“Four officers from the Classified Criminal Investigations Department (USJT) came to record statements from Dr Mahathir and Mukhriz,” the lawyers said.

“The session lasted about an hour while the investigation was over the gathering near Dataran Merdeka on August 2.

“The case is being investigated under the Peaceful Assembly Act as well as the Prevention and Control of Infectious Diseases Act.

“Dr Mahathir and Mukhriz have made it clear that they would only answer questions in court.”

Last Monday, opposition MPs were met by riot police and threatened with arrest as they tried to march to Parliament.

The MPs were stopped from entering Parliament where the last special sitting to discuss Covid-19 measures and the emergency proclamation was supposed to be held.

Parliament was closed following Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin’s order on July 31, citing fresh Covid-19 infections involving Parliament staff.

Prior to the announcement, Parliament was adjourned five times on July 29 as opposition lawmakers demanded the government explain the Yang di-Pertuan Agong’s stern rebuke over the revocation of the Emergency Ordinances.

Several other opposition lawmakers were called to the Dang Wangi district police station for questioning over the same matter.

The MPs who were called up today were Tan Kok Wai (Cheras), William Leong (Selayang), Fong Kui Lun (Bukit Bintang), Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad (Setiawangsa), Charles Santiago (Klang), Fuziah Salleh (Kuantan), Hasanuddin Mohd Yunus (Hulu Langat), Wong Chen (Subang) and Sim Tze Tzin (Bayan Baru). – August 9, 2021.
