14 Umno MPs no longer back Muhyiddin, says report

FOURTEEN Umno MPs have withdrawn their support for Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin, said Umno Online today.

According to the official party news site, Umno president Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi had added six more names to the list of MPs who have pulled their support for the Bersatu president.

The additional names were presented to the Yang di-Pertuan Agong in a letter dated August 4.

Besides Zahid, the other 13 MPs in the list were Najib Razak (Pekan), Ahmad Maslan (Pontian), Dr Shamsul Annuar Nasarah (Lenggong), Abdul Azeez Abdul Rahim (Baling), Azalina Othman Said (Pengerang), Bung Mokhtar Radin (Kinabatangan), Ahmad Jazlan Yaakub (Machang), Mohd Nizar Zakaria (Parit), Ahmad Nazlan Idris (Jerantut), Ramli Mohd Nor (Cameron Highlands), Mohamad Alamin (Kimanis), Noh Omar (Tg Karang), and Tengku Razaleigh Hamzah (Gua Musang).

According to Zahid, the 14 had never signed any statutory declarations in support of Muhyiddin, and have asked Dewan Rakyat Speaker Azhar Azizan Harun to change their seats from government to opposition.

“None of the above MPs have withdrawn the statutory declarations that were presented to the Yang di-Pertuan Agong,” said Zahid in the three-page letter.

On August 4, the government said it would table a confidence vote for Muhyiddin in Parliament during the September sitting.

This came after Zahid had announced that a sufficient number of Umno MPs had withdrawn support for the prime minister, wiping away his slim majority in Parliament.

Barisan Nasional has 42 lawmakers, of which 38 are from Umno. At present, the Grik seat is vacant following the death of its Umno representative last November. – August 9, 2021.
