UMNO vice-president Mohamed Khaled Nordin will quit his government-appointed post as chairman of Boustead Holdings Berhad tomorrow.

In a statement today, he said his decision is linked to his party’s claim yesterday that it had enough MPs who have pulled their support from Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin and the Perikatan Nasional government to cause its collapse.

“Umno has made a clear decision to withdraw its support from the prime minister and the PN government.

“As such, I announce my resignation as non-independent, non executive chairman of Boustead Holdings Bhd effective tomorrow,” Khaled said.

Khaled is not an MP but was appointed to the post at Boustead on April 30 last year, soon after Muhyiddin came to power.

Muhyiddin made several appointments to government-linked companies from among parties he formed the PN government with, such as Umno and PAS.

Other Umno leaders to have quit their appointments at government-linked companies as the party’s fall-out with Muhyiddin and Bersatu worsened include Machang MP and Kelantan Umno chief Ahmad Jazlan Yaakub, who resigned as chairman of the Malaysian Palm Oil Board in January.

In April, Pasir Puteh Umno division chief Zawawi Othman also quit as chairman of Kesedar Kilang Sdn Bhd.

Yesterday, Lenggong MP Shamsul Anuar Nasarah quit as Energy and Natural Resources Minister.

Muhyiddin, in a special televised statement earlier today, said he would not resign and will instead test his majority with a confidence vote when Parliament sits in September. – August 4, 2021.
