PRIME Minister Muhyiddin Yassin arrived at Istana Negara for an audience with the Yang di-Pertuan Agong after his parliamentary majority was called into question following the pullout of several Umno members from his administration.

The Malaysian Insight learned that after his meeting with the king, Muhyiddin is expected to chair a cabinet meeting.

This is, however, the standard practice on Wednesdays, just before the prime minister chairs the cabinet meeting.

Muhyiddin arrived at the palace around 10.50am. His vehicle was seen leaving the palace at 11.50am.

It is also reported that the prime minister would be making a special announcement from the Prime Minister’s Office later today.

Malay daily Utusan Malaysia reported that the announcement would be made before the cabinet meeting.

“He will be meeting the Agong face to face, and the cabinet meeting too will be conducted physically,” said a source.

Bernama reported that Attorney-General Idrus Harun was seen entering Istana Negara earlier at around 9.30am.

Today’s meeting with the king would have a new perspective following an announcement by Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi yesterday that they had submitted a letter to the palace to withdraw their support for the prime minister.

Zahid told reporters yesterday that he had sufficient numbers to reduce Muhyiddin’s majority in Parliament. – August 4, 2021.
