WITH the government coming under pressure following the Yang di-Pertuan Agong’s stern rebuke today, Dewan Rakyat has been adjourned again, for a fifth time.

Deputy speaker Mohd Rashid Hasnon made the announcement at 5.15pm. He did not state when the sitting would continue although the original plan was for the sitting to conclude on Monday.

He said that the afternoon sitting today – day four of five days of special meeting – was being adjourned as there were two more Covid-19 infections detected from RTK tests done at the Parliament.

“There are now four cases of positive Covid-19 involving Parliament staff, therefore the sitting today is adjourned,” said Rashid.

Opposition MPs were clearly disgusted by the postponement while asking Rashid to justify his action.

The Batu Pahat MP, however, proceeded to the exit, leaving behind the shouting MPs who were seeking clarification.

Earlier at 3.30pm, Rashid had asked all MPs to undergo Covid-19 screening after claiming that the Health Ministry detected two positive cases.

At 1pm, the sitting was adjourned to 2.30pm after a ruckus in Dewan Rakyat following the Agong’s statement rebutting de facto law minister Takiyuddin Hassan’s emergency revocation.

Opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim had also filed a no-confidence motion against Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin today.

“Muhyiddin should be sacked as prime minister for going against the Yang di-Pertuan Agong’s instructions,” the Port Dickson MP said in an online press conference from Parliament.

“If he has any integrity left, he should resign as he dare not face Parliament,” he added.

Anwar’s office said the motion was handed to speaker Azhar Azizan Harun at 3pm.

Apart from calling for the resignation of Muhyiddin, Anwar also urged Takiyuddin to relinquish his post following the statement from the palace.

“Takiyuddin must also resign after he was caught deceiving the Parliament, using the king’s name for justification,” he told reporters. – July 29, 2021.
