Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin must resign for ignoring the royal decree for all emergency ordinances to be debated in Parliament before being revoked, Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said today.

The Umno president added that the de facto law minister Takiyuddin Hassan must also step down from his post for announcing the revocations without getting the Agong’s assent.

“Umno is disappointed with the Muhyiddin administration’s decision to ignore the Agong’s decree that all emergency ordinances must be debated in Parliament.

“It is even more disappointing when the king himself exposed the revocations of the ordinances as announced by the law minister was confusing, and had not obtained his majesty’s assent.

“This act is clearly an act of treason against the Agong,” he said.

As such, the Bagan Datuk lawmaker said Muhyiddin and Takiyuddin must resign from their respective posts.

“This is also why Umno withdrew support for Muhyiddin and demanded that a more capable person take over as prime minister,” said Zahid, who missed the ongoing Dewan Rakyat sitting due to self-quarantine after testing positive for Covid-19.

On Monday, Takiyuddin announced that the emergency ordinances had been revoked by the government effective July 21. He said the decision was made in accordance with Article 150 (3) of the Federal Constitution.

His announcement raised consternation among MPs, with many questioning whether the decision had the king’s consent. Takiyuddin deflected questions, saying he would answer them on Monday, August 2.

A statement by the palace today, however, confirmed that the king was not consulted on the revocation of the ordinances.

Yang di-Pertuan Agong Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri’ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah said he was disappointed with the government’s announcement it had withdrawn emergency ordinances on July 21 without any debate in Parliament.

He also said that he was not informed of the government’s intention to do so.

The king also said the government’s actions were disrespectful of the principles of rules of law, and paid no heed to the constitutional powers and functions of the Agong.

The Straits Times today also reported that Muhyiddin allies have asked him to resign following the rebuke from the king.
