THE nationwide “Hartal Doktor Kontrak” kicked off today with about 50 healthcare workers walking out of Sungai Buloh Hospital, the main Covid-19 treatment facility in Malaysia.

The strike started at 11am sharp amid police presence at the various hospitals.

Clad mostly in black, the group hold placards which read “We are future specialists” and “Specialists in the making, yet our future is aching”.

The police have prohibited the doctors from speaking to the media. The authorities have also locked the hospital gates.

Meanwhile, a group of doctors have gathered at the Kuala Lumpur Hospital car park.

Police have asked the doctors to disperse.

Groups of doctors are also spotted outside Shah Alam Hospital in Shah Alam, Selayang Hospital in Kepong and Sultanah Nur Zahirah Hospital in Kuala Terengganu.

“Give us permanent, equal rights, we respect the government, but we need security. We don’t want to quit but we want MOH to give us equal treatment,” said a doctor at Shah Alam Hospital.

“Some cannot make it today but there are about 40 of us in Shah Alam,” the doctor added.

The Kuala Lumpur Hospital walkout ends at 11.30am.

Doctors at Sungai Buloh Hospital, Shah Alam Hospital and Sultanah Nur Zahirah Hospital are dispersed by 11.45am.

Around noon, despite police orders to disperse, the doctors told The Malaysian Insight they are waiting for their organiser to join them.

The organiser, a Dr Deeban, was called into the hospital director’s office before the walkout and he is still in there when the doctors disperse at 12.45pm. – July 26, 2021.
