Two-year extension for contract doctors acceptable… for now

AS one of those embroiled in the controversy with regard to contract doctors, I was relieved to hear of the recent two-year extension announced by the government.

I was never in favour of organising any form of strike or protest as this would cause unnecessary further chaos and uncertainly for the people.

For now, the two-year extension is acceptable to me as the government has also promised us better benefits and an assurance that contract doctors will be given attention soon.

As a doctor, we are bound by our pledge to serve the people and I believe we should not be indulging in protests and demonstrations as this goes against what the medical profession stands for.

Professions like medicine, teaching and even religious callings should not be based on money and other gains, but focused more on helping the people.

In view of this, doctors should not be getting involved in activities that could tarnish the image of our profession.

For now, I believe we should be thankful for the two-year extension and focus our efforts on curbing the Covid-19 spread first.

I am sure after that, we can sit down with the government or relevant authorities and iron out our issues. – July 25, 2021.
