ANYONE who is arrested for participating in the Konvoi #lawan demonstration tomorrow will be provided with legal assistance, event organiser Sekretariat Solidariti Rakyat (SSR) said.

SSR spokesman Mohd Asraf Sharafi Mohd Azhar told The Malaysian Insight the organiser will be providing legal advice and help should participants face “harassment” from the authorities.

The protest is unique in the sense that it involves participants protesting from their vehicles while waving black flags. It will be the first ever ‘in-vehicle’ protest in the country.

SSR is demanding the resignation of Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin, a full parliamentary sitting and a moratorium on bank loan repayments for all.

Participants are urged to be in their vehicles throughout the protest, which starts from 3pm, and to fly a black flag.

There are several rules for the protest, including the need to travel only within a 10km distance and with a maximum of two people per vehicle in keeping with the government’s standard operating procedures.

Participants are also urged to adhere to traffic rules and not to cause traffic jams.

However, they are asked to avoid showing the vehicle registration numbers in any photos, so the authorities cannot identify them.

Asraf said SSR has appointed representatives for each state to handle the protest tomorrow.

“There will be a person who will co-ordinate the protest tomorrow. We will be informing the public soon.

“The person in charge will take care and handle the protest and if there are any problems, the public can refer to the co-ordinator. So far each state will have one coordinator,” he added.

Asraf said anyone joining the protest tomorrow must follow strict MCO standard operating procedures laid down by the government.

“If you live in Kuala Lumpur, make sure you keep the distance within a 10km radius. You are not allowed to cross beyond 10km or cross state boundaries.

“We have already put up the guidelines on our social media and we hope the public can abide by the order,” he said.

Asraf yesterday told The Malaysian Insight that protests were the only way for the public to get its demands for change heard by the government.

For this reason, the group will continue its campaign of street demonstrations until all three of its demands are met.

On July 17, SSR held a peaceful anti-government protest at Dataran Merdeka, where protesters brandished black flags and banners with the hashtag #KeluarDanLawan (Come out and fight).

Protesters also carried mock corpses to emphasise the many Covid-19 deaths and suicides due to the government’s failure to contain the outbreak.

“The black flags are a symbol of resistance and opposition to a system that is unfair and does not side with the people.

“There were 14 flags to represent each state with people who are angry at our government,” Asyraf had said.

Following the event, Asyraf and two others, Mohd Alsatri of Suaram and poet Taufik Azhar, were fined RM2,000 each for breaching the MCO.
