Boat with migrants sinks near Tunisian coast, 17 dead

A BOAT carrying undocumented migrants has sunk near the coast of Tunisia, leaving at least 17 people dead, reported Russian state-owned news agency Sputnik, quoting a spokesperson for the national office of the Red Crescent.

The boat was heading from Libya when the tragedy took place, said the spokesperson.

He added that 160 others were rescued by the Tunisian naval forces.

Europe has been witnessing an influx of refugees in the past several years who are seeking to escape from war and poverty in Africa and the Middle East.

 Many asylum-seekers, however, die in the waters of the Mediterranean Sea while trying to reach Europe. – Bernama, July 22, 2021.
