49 remanded over Penang Aidiladha prayer gathering

FORTY-EIGHT foreign men and a Malaysian senior citizen are under remand to assist in investigations into mass Aidiladha prayers at the side of the road in Bukit Mertajam, which contravened public health orders.

Bukit Mertajam Magistrate’s Court assistant registrar, Hasliza Razak allowed remand until Friday for the local man and Saturday for the 48 foreigners, aged 20 to 43.

The case is filed under section 269 of the penal code in relation to negligent acts that can cause the spread of life-threatening disease.

The detainees were brought to court at 10.10am in police lock-up clothing.

Yesterday a video went viral of men amassed for prayers at the roadside in Taman Pelangi, Juru.
