THE Melaka Tengah and Jasin district police chiefs and an inspector from the anti-vice and gambling unit were among nine people remanded today for bribery.

The three officers of the law were brought to the Putrajaya Magistrates’ Court at 3pm where magistrate Muhamad Safuan Azhar granted a six-day remand order for them.

The three suspects were an assistant commissioner, 54, deputy superintendent, 46, and inspector, 32.  They were detained in several locations in Malacca during an after-midnight operation .

They were brought to the Malyasian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) headquarters in Putrajaya before they were escorted to court today. Their remand ends on May 22.

State police chief Abdul Jalil Hassan confirmed the detention of the Melaka Tengah police chief in an earlier New Straits Times report.

The district police chief is believed to have been arrested over suspected links to a protection racket run by some of his men and other police from the Jasin district.

The policemen were allegedly collecting payments from illegal gambling dens and massage parlours in Malacca in return for protection from police action.

Prior to the district police chief’s arrest, six people were produced in court for a remand order.

The MACC obtained a six-day remand order for the six.

Three were police officers with the rank of deputy superintendent and an inspector. The remaining are civilians. – May 17, 2017.
