THE recent donation of one million doses of the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine by the United States to Malaysia as part of President Joe Biden’s grand vaccine diplomacy presented a new dawn of hope and great opening for global recovery efforts spearheaded by America and the rejuvenation of our bilateral ties has been refreshing and spot on.

Our time-tested relations that stretched for decades, which have withstood an array of global and regional challenges, have been proved to be resilient and future-driven.
The new vision outlined by Biden has not come under a more crucial and decisive timeline in global history and the future ahead, with the need for a visionary and forward-looking leadership centred on moral conviction and value-driven drive in leading the world in the recovery journey and standing up for global peace and collaboration, cementing the importance of American role and influence in global affairs.
The recent celebration of the 245th Independence Day of the United States on July 4 reflects the shared history, destiny and principles of both nations in upholding the pillars of freedom, democracy, justice and human rights and the fight against oppression, discrimination and abuses of values and humanitarian ethics.
The strategic importance of the United States to Malaysia’s long-term interests and socioeconomic and security empowerment remains the central pillar to our future growth, stability and security.
The core essence and underlying strength that mark the cornerstone of our bilateral relations will endure and will remain the core priority to both sides in further bolstering mutual significance and interests, especially in the light of the return to great power politics and pressing emerging global issues that require partnerships and close collaboration at the bilateral, regional and global level.
America’s unyielding conviction in upholding the foundation of democracy, freedom, social justice, free and open economy and equitable prosperity will serve as the pillar of strength and principal support in maintaining a free, fair and open trade and economic exchange and most importantly, providing the support and assurance in security and technological development, which are fundamental to the country and the region.
High-level systemic and structured collaborative initiatives and grassroot engagements in fostering deeper understanding and building of rapport and cultural exchanges that are in gear will serve as the propeller of greater people to people ties that will lead to a spillover impact to various fields.
This will create new openings in strengthening Track II and Track III diplomacy with greater intensity of efforts and initiatives in engaging various levels of the society, especially the younger generations.
The myriad of commendable contributions in various capacities, including monetary, technical, technological, human capital and direct transfer of expertise and knowledge over the many decades have often gone unnoticed and unappreciated, particularly at the societal level, with less emphasis given in highlighting the impact and significant they play in Malaysia’s nation-building, growth, development and security since our independence.
The immediate and long-term positive impact on the spectrum of economic, commerce, trade, defence, security and technological development is undeniable and this will only grow stronger as understanding and exchanges are rapidly developed and nurtured.
Throughout decades of the aspirational milestone of interdependent and strategically indispensable bilateral partnership that transcends boundaries, the stakes have not been higher and the path ahead has not been more hopeful.
US-Malaysia cooperation in other non-military and humanitarian fields will go a long way in further cementing closer understanding and transfer of knowledge, experience, exposure and expertise in raising the local capability and readiness in facing future threats.
Various impactful and meaningful social and educational initiatives that have been in place with the likes of the Fulbright programme, the Young Southeast Asian Leaders Initiative, greater exchanges and collaborations in the education and socio-cultural sphere and others have further brought greater connection between the two communities and a greater pool of expanded activities and engagement in more fields and avenues should be initiated and facilitated by the government.
More in-depth joint partnerships, training and transfer of expertise and knowledge in the field of high-skilled and high-technology framework, future-driven pillars of growth with the likes of nano and quantum technology, artificial intelligence, 5G growth, green technology, blockchain capacity and a digitalised and knowledge led economy of the future will spearhead economic resilience and leading the regional and global recovery path.
As the leader of the next frontiers of innovation, value and knowledge creation and high-impact technological and scientific breakthroughs that will change the landscape of human development and prosperity, the American spirit of leading the world in innovation, creativity, and the unyielding push and resolve for advancement in charting new frontiers of hope and achievement for mankind will be the milestone and pinnacle of opportunity for joint progress and prosperity for the common good of all nations and society, Malaysia included.
While it is acknowledged that our future growth resilience lies in many fields, the facets of national interest, survival and security will remain of utmost importance to our long-term future projection of growth and sustainability.
The strengthening of comprehensive cooperation with the US in defence and security fields as reflected in the sharing, development and transfer of intelligence, technical and military expertise and exchanges and close cooperation will further reinforce the confidence and strength in providing deterrence and building positive spirit of trust and understanding.
The US has provided nearly US$200 million (RM825 million) in grant assistance to the Malaysian Armed Forces since 2017, a testimony to the growing importance and depth of security partnership, which has grown significantly over the past two decades, especially against the backdrop of growing tensions and turbulence in the regional and global security arena.
This cooperation remains extremely crucial in providing the right capacity building for our armed forces, a platform further bolstered by the more than 100 security cooperation and partnership activities and programmes by the two countries, which include the Cobra Gold initiative and others.
This will further deepen skill enhancement, joint understanding and interoperability capabilities and capacities, especially in maritime security and other settings, which will be useful in humanitarian settings as well as in real-time conflicts in facing both traditional and non-traditional threats.
The tenets and fundamentals of our diplomatic craft and foreign affairs have been the model of emulation and pride of many, which we will continue to build and develop.
Our proven and time-tested relations with America will endure against future challenges and have been fortified and developed with unyielding resolve and fervent dedication from both sides for the positive impact to the people’s prosperity and both countries’ development.
Malaysia should not let complacency set in on further building strategic and trust and value-based ties with America at this crucial period of time during the post-pandemic transition and amid the return of great power conflict.
This is crucial in building trust, support, sincerity, openness and willingness to deepen and strengthen our relationship that underpins the centrepiece of greater regional stability and prosperity.
The path ahead for the nation and the region remains both challenging and opportunistic and it is imperative for both countries to continue, with unwavering drive and tenacity, work closely and more importantly, to solidify the bond and sincere partnership that will lead to shared prosperity, peace and growth.
It is our fervent hope and aspirations that US-Malaysia ties will continue to be strong, resilient, future-driven and forward-looking and we appreciate all the efforts and support shown by the Americans throughout our decades-old friendship.
Happy 245th Independence, America. – July 12, 2021.
