The Finance Ministry today denied that Putrajaya has plans to sell any property linked to airports, including the Sultan Abdul Aziz Shah Airport.

The ministry said in a statement today the airport property is a strategic asset to the government, which it has no plans to sell.

“Referring to speculation over the airport, the ministry would like to inform that the government has no plans to sell any airport property in Malaysia, including the Subang airport, to any parties,” the ministry said in a statement.

The ministry added that Malaysia Airports Holdings Berhad (MAHB) remains the leaseholder of the land in which the Subang airport is located until 2067.

“As of now, MAHB is still the party mandated to develop the assets around the airport,” it said.

“Part of the land around the airport has been sub-leased by MAHB to Subang Skypark Sdn Bhd for 30 years (2007-2037), which includes the management of the Terminal 3, the car park and hangarage,” it said.

“Any effort to maximise the value of the airport asset will not involve the sale of property.”

The ministry also warned all parties not to spread rumours and fake news on this issue.

The Subang airport is one of 39 airports managed by MAHB under the operating agreement inked in 2009. The airports operator is also not the owner of any property of the airport.

MAHB has submitted a RM1.3 billion Subang Airport Regeneration Plan to the government.

The plan is part of Putrajaya’s larger framework for the future of the national aviation and aerospace industries, in particular the National Airports Strategic Plan and the Malaysian Aerospace Industry Blueprint 2030.

Meanwhile, construction and property firm WCT Holdings Bhd submitted a separate proposal to the Transport, Finance and Energy and Natural Resources Ministries on March 1 to redevelop the airport. This was reported to be at a cost of RM3.7 billion over 10 years.

WCT also operates the Terminal 3, also known as SkyPark Terminal, through its 60%-owned subsidiary Subang Skypark Sdn Bhd.

It has a 30-year sublease concession agreement with MAHB, which ends in December 2037, and also carries the option to extend for 29 years.

National sovereign wealth fund Khazanah Nasional Bhd is the majority stakeholder of MAHB. – June 25, 2021.
