FORMER Bar Council president Lim Chee Wee denied that he had sent several messages to a foreign client suggesting court decisions can be influenced.

In a statement, the senior lawyer said he has already lodged a police report regarding the matter.

“This is a criminal defamation made against me. I have lodged a police report on the purported text messages and I am giving my fullest cooperation to the cops.

“These purported text messages are in connection with a matter pending in court and which were allegedly sent recently by a third party.”

“I never made any such statements in the purported text messages and I do not know the party who allegedly sent the purported text messages,” said Lim.

It was reported earlier this week that the police are investigating a senior lawyer, who is accused of making remarks bringing the judiciary into disrepute, said Sepang police chief Wan Kamarul Wan Yusoff.

Wan Kamarul said a police report was lodged against the lawyer by a special officer to Chief Justice Tengku Maimun Tuan Mat on June 7.

He said the investigation was being conducted according to Section 500 of the Penal Code for criminal defamation and Section 504 of the same law for intentional insult to provoke breach of peace.

Lim further said that the company named in the police report was no longer his client since he left his former firm in June 2020.

“I am not involved in any alleged settlement and appeal involving the company. I have not communicated with or been involved in any way with the company for a year,” he stressed.

Yesterday, The Malaysian Bar said a lawyer’s purported action of suggesting that court decisions can be influenced, would be considered misconduct if it was proven to be true.

“Such purported conduct, as reported, is disgraceful and unbecoming of a member of the legal community.

“The Bar does not tolerate such unscrupulous and unethical behaviour, which will inevitably tarnish the good name of the profession,” its president AG Kalidas said in a statement. – June 20, 2021.
