Deaths and ICU numbers drop, total cases still high at 5,738

COVID-19 cases in intensive care units (ICU) fell for the first time in forty days today to 909 patients needing critical care, according to Health Ministry infographics.

Of this, of 441 patients are currently on respiratory support.

Yesterday, there were 924 cases in ICU.

Daily ICU cases were on a record-breaking streak since May 6, when 354 patients were receiving care at ICUs at hospitals nationwide.

Meanwhile, 60 people succumbed to the coronavirus, taking the Covid-19 death toll to 4,202. There were 73 deaths yesterday.

The daily tally still remained in the 5,000 range increasing to 5,738 from yesterday’s 5,150.

Meanwhile, recoveries outnumbered the new cases after 7,530 people were discharged.

The higher recoveries led to lower active cases with 66,097 patients currently being treated for Covid-19.

Of the 60 deaths today, two were dead-on-arrival cases, Health Director-General Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said in a statement later.

The youngest fatality was a 29-year-old man who died at the Tuanku Jaafar hospital in Seremban, he suffered from obesity.

The oldest death was of a 91-year-old man who died at the Cheras rehabilitation hospital in Kuala Lumpur. No information was given on whether he had comorbidities.

A third of the deaths today were reported in Selangor, followed by Negri Sembilan, which reported 10 deaths.

Johor recorded nine deaths, while Sabah and Labuan reported four cases each.

Kuala Lumpur reported three deaths, while Sarawak, Malacca and Kedah reported two cases each.

Kelantan, Perak, Terengganu, and Penang reported one death each. – June 17, 2021.
