DE facto law minister Takiyuddin Hassan said parliament would convene in September as promised by Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin.
The PAS secretary-general said the Yang di-Pertuan Agong yesterday decreed the House should meet but did not say when it should meet.
“The king did not specify which month the sitting should be held. He only said as soon as possible,” Takiyuddin said in an interview with Harakah Daily after Yang di-Pertuan Agong Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri’ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah ordered parliament to reconvene soonest possible.
“The prime minister has already said it will only convene in September or October.
“Now we are near the end of June. There are July and August, and then September soon and we will have parliament then,” he said.
The king, after a meeting with the Malay rulers, had issued a statement calling for parliament to sit and debate issues involving Covid-19.
The Malay rulers called for the same in a separate statement. They also said the emergency should not be extended beyond August 1.
Parliament, state assemblies and elections are suspended during the emergency, triggering protests over the Muhyiddin government’s perceived avoidance of checks and balances.
In February, the king decreed that parliament should meet even during a state of emergency.
The emergency, declared on January 11 to as a pandemic containment measure, is to end on August 1.
In his address to the nation on Tuesday, Muhyiddin said parliament could convene in phase 3 of the national recovery plan, which is around September or October.
“I give my commitment that parliament will open in this phase (in compliance with) strict standard operating procedure,” the prime minister said. – June 17, 2021.
