EVERYONE in Malaysia, documented or otherwise, has to be vaccinated, said Khairy Jamaluddin, the co-ordinating minister for the national immunisation programme, in response to the Immigration Department raid on Monday night in Cyberjaya, in which 156 undocumented migrant workers were arrested.

Last week, Home Minister Hamzah Zainuddin said that the government would round up migrants during the lockdown from June 1 to June 14 to ensure that they are vaccinated.

“We are continuing to have discussions with the Ministry of Home Affairs. As far as I am concerned, we need to vaccinate everyone in Malaysia,” he said at a joint press conference with Health Minister Dr Adham Baba today.

Khairy declined to comment further on the matter until discussions are concluded.

Earlier today, he said Malaysia had reached its 150,000 Covid-19 vaccinations a day and was aiming for 200,000 shots a day next.

Khairy said the key to ensuring that the goal is reached is to ensure the vaccines are consistently administered and that there are enough vaccines.

Adham added that steps have been taken to increase the number of vaccinators to administer the jabs.

“We have come to an agreement that all housemen in their sixth posting will be asked to become vaccinators.

“Those who have graduated from medical school as dentists or nurses will also be trained to administer the jabs. We have also asked retired healthcare workers to join the programme,” he said.

As of yesterday, 3,790,121 doses of vaccine have been administered.

Nearly 1.2 million of the recipients have completed the full course of two doses.

Registration for inoculation stood at 12,774,132 yesterday. – June 9, 2021.
