Malaysia breaches 80,000 threshold for active Covid-19 cases

ACTIVE Covid-19 cases nationwide surged past the 80,000 mark after Malaysia reported 7,105 fresh cases against 6,083 recoveries over the past 24 hours, said director-general of health Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah. 

According to Noor Hisham, there are now 80,474 active cases.

There are also 872 people receiving intensive care unit today, an increase of 21 from yesterday. Noor Hisham said 419 of these patients require respiratory support, down three from yesterday.

Noor Hisham said 71 people died within the past 24 hours, taking the nation’s death toll to 2,867. All but two of the dead were Malaysian.

Selangor reported 28 deaths, the highest by state, taking the overall toll in the state to 797.

Other states reporting deaths were Johor (eight), Sarawak (seven), Kuala Lumpur (six), Kelantan (five), Malacca (four), Kedah (three), Negri Sembilan, Terengganu, and Perak (two each), Sabah, Pahang, Labuan and Penang (one each).

Of those who died, five were declared dead on arrival at hospital (DOA).

Selangor had two DOA cases, while Labuan, Sarawak and Kelantan had one case each.

The oldest death today was a male, aged 93, and was the sole DOA case in Labuan. 

The youngest victim, a 27-year-old female, who suffered from asthma, died in Sibu Hospital, Sarawak. – June 1, 2021.
