MALAYSIA hit another grim record today, with 8,290 new Covid-19 infections reported over the past 24 hours, the country’s highest to date.

This is the first time the daily toll has surpassed 8,000, raising the national caseload to 549,514.

Selangor led again with 2,052 new cases, while Kelantan contributed the second highest number with 851.

After Kelantan comes Kuala Lumpur with 830 cases, Johor with 762 and Sarawak with 698.

Nationwide, daily cases have been exceeding 7,000 for the last three days, until yesterday’s 7,857.

Health authorities have predicted the possibility of 10,000 cases daily following lax observance of standard operating procedure (SOP) two weeks ago during the Hari Raya Aidilfitri festival.

Health Ministry director-general Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said two days ago 12 new community clusters stemming from Hari Raya visits were identified in a single day (May 25) in seven states, and said he expected the number of cases to increase.

Hari Raya fell on May 13 and 14. The nationwide MCO 3.0 was imposed on May 12, with strict SOP for Hari Raya, limiting the number of people in a house at any one time from within the same district, and a complete ban on large gatherings like open houses and banquets.

As of yesterday (May 27), 2.7 million people have received Covid-19 vaccines, according to figures tweeted by the Special Committee on Covid-19 Vaccine Supply.

Of this, 1,725,364 have received the first dose, and 987,012 have received two doses. – May 28, 2021.
