POLICE have confiscated the handphone of former youth and sports minister Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman after he gave his statement at the Dang Wangi police station.

The Muar MP said police took his phone after he was questioned by the cops over a video he uploaded on his social media account on the death of A. Ganapathy while in police custody.

“I’m not sure if confiscating it is legal but I will leave it to my lawyer,” he said.

“What is the need to take away my phone? It is unnecessary because I allow them to access my social media accounts,” he told reporters outside Dang Wangi police station this afternoon.

Syed Saddiq had, using his social media accounts, called for a thorough investigation into Ganapathy’s death while in police custody on April 28.

In that video, Syed Saddiq said that police brutality was a serious issue and that if such a fate could befall the victims, “it could happen to us”.

He also called for the long-proposed Independent Police Complaints and Misconduct Commission (IPCMC) to be set up.

Ganapathy’s death has resulted in online criticism against the police using hashtags like #JusticeForGanapathy and #BrutalityinMalaysia.

Syed Saddiq said that he is not blaming the police, saying that the probe was deliberately orchestrated by the MCMC.

The case is being investigated under Section 503 of the Penal Code and Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act. – May 22, 2021.
