MACC raids four Penang government offices over undersea tunnel project

FOUR state government agencies and three companies in Penang were raided by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) today, in relation to the state’s proposed undersea tunnel project, reports The Star.

The raid comes four days after a report lodged by Parti Cinta Malaysia vice-president Huan Cheng Guan at MACC’s headquarters in Putrajaya.

It is learnt MACC raided the offices of Penang Public Works Department, Penang State Secretary, the Penang Office of Lands and Mines and the Penang Valuation and Property Services Department.

The three other companies raided were property development and construction companies.

The undersea tunnel project was awarded in 2013, and the Penang government said the time frame given to Consortium Zenith Construction Sdn Bhd to complete the feasibility report was 30 months.

But it has yet to be completed until today.

The undersea tunnel, linking the island and mainland, is part of the RM6.3 billion project undertaken by Consortium Zenith. The project also included three paired roads.

The Penang government had written to the Works Ministry in April 2016, asking for the undersea tunnel project to be changed to a third bridge project.

The ministry had responded that it could not approve major infrastructure projects without supporting documents.

In recent months, various quarters, including the ministry and the Barisan Nasional Strategic Communications director Datuk Seri Abdul Rahman Dahlan had demanded the Penang government come clean on the delay of the feasibility report. – January 9, 2018.
