LEFT to fend for themselves, orphanage Pertubuhan Kebajikan Anak-Anak Yatim Ummi in Kajang, Selangor has turned to crowdfunding for medicine after a Covid-19 outbreak had trapped some 35 children inside.

A Facebook post, which was put up by Azaad Mohamed Ummar yesterday, said they needed funds to buy medicine for the children aged between 16 and 19 after raising sufficient funds for food.

“The amount raised so far is RM19,107.89, although the initial target was RM15,000,” said Azaad last night.

According to Azaad, the orphanage is managed by husband and wife, Tok Ayah and Ummi.

But the death of Tok Ayah last week due to Covid-19 and the hospitalisation of Ummi has forced the orphanage to turn to the public for help, said Azaad.

“The caretakers’ children usually help out but they have all tested positive and can no longer access the premises.”

All except nine of the 35 children have already tested positive for Covid-19, with more starting to show symptoms, he added.

The public who want to donate are asked to contact Ummi’s daughter, Sherry at 011-62628114 for further updates. – May 17, 2021.
