Record high of 44 Covid-19 deaths

The country reported 44 Covid-19 deaths in the past 24 hours. Total number of fatalities have now reached 1,866. – The Malaysian Insight file pic, May 15, 2021.

MALAYSIA saw its deadliest day since the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic after reporting 44 deaths from the virus today.

Health Director-General Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said the new fatalities have raised the death toll to 1,866.

Only one of the 44 victims who succumbed to the coronavirus was a foreigner while the remaining were citizens.

The oldest, among the deceased, was a 92 year-old man in Sarikei, Sarawak, who also suffered from high blood pressure and chronic lung disease.

Meanwhile, the youngest person to succumb today was a 48 year-old man in Banting, Selangor. The deceased had diabetes, high blood pressure and chronic kidney disease.

The highest number of deaths reported in the daily tally prior to this was 39, on May 12.

Meanwhile, intensive care unit (ICU) cases continue to remain high with 503 patients, of 272 of whom require respiratory support

The country has also been seeing an upsurge in active cases since April 6. As of 12pm today, there were 42,135 cases requiring care nationwide. – May 15, 2021.
