DAP has given up a seat each in Malacca and Johor to Bersatu to contest in Ayer Hitam, a MCA stronghold currently held by the party’s deputy president Dr Wee Ka Siong.
A source told The Malaysian Insight that DAP agreed to give up the parliamentary seats of Alor Gajah and Tanjung Piai to Bersatu.
Both seats are also held by MCA.
“If at least 15% of the Malay voters in Ayer Hitam swing towards the opposition, Wee Ka Siong will lose.
Pakatan Harapan finalised its seat negotiations for 165 federal seats in the peninsula and announced it at its convention on Sunday.
Bersatu will contest in 52 seats, PKR (51), DAP (35) and Amanah (27).
DAP was allocated one seat fewer than the 13th general election in 2013.
Wee is a three-term MP for Ayer Hitam. He defeated a PAS candidate in 2013 by 7,310 votes.
Tanjung Piai is held by former deputy youth and sports minister Wee Jeck Seng, who defeated DAP in 2008 and 2013 to capture the seat.
Alor Gajah was won by MCA’s Koh Nai Kwong in 2013 by 11,597 votes.
DAP national organising secretary Anthony Loke told party mouthpiece The Rocket in a Facebook Live interview on Sunday night that the party decided to give up Alor Gajah as Bersatu stood the best chance of capturing the Malay-majority seat.
Created in 1974, Alor Gajah is an Umno stronghold. MCA took over the seat in 2004 and successfully defended it until the previous elections. – January 9, 2018.
