THE admission by Subang state rep Hannah Yeoh of Christian links in her newly launched book shows DAP’s hypocrisy, Umno-owned Utusan Malaysia said in a commentary yesterday.

Using the pseudonym Awang Selamat, the paper’s op-ed team said Yeoh’s book had become a hot topic on social media and her admission was considered serious as it touched on religious sensitivities as Islam was the official religion of the country.

Yeoh in her book, admitted that Christian movements aided her with funds and campaigning.

Awang said Yeoh in her book also admitted how she uses her political post to preach Christianity.

“Her call for Christian followers and the members abroad specifically is very clear. She asked them to follow her footsteps in politics to rebuild Malaysia based on Christianity,” Awang said in the weekly commentary.

Awang said there were comments on social media questioning DAP’s secularism principle that religion and politics should not be mixed.

“Supposedly for DAP, Malaysia is a secular country whereby politics should be separated from religion-related matters. Supposedly for DAP, the parties that like to mix religion with politics like Umno and PAS, should be heavily opposed,” he said.

Yeoh’s revelation showed that she had mixed religion and politics, Awang added.

Awang advised political leaders to watch their words and actions to avoid provocation.

He also hoped that Yeoh’s revelation had nothing to do with DAP’s admission in an event in 2013 when the party declared to make Penang and Malaysia a Christian country.

Awang further spoke about Indonesia’s Ahok, his defeat in the governor’s election in Jakarta recently and also the court finding him guilty of blasphemy.

He said that Ahok’s biggest fault was meddling in Islamic religious matters for political mileage and personal gain.

“Non-Muslims who try to manipulate Islam and do not safeguard religious sensitivity will only invite trouble,” Awang said.

He said Ahok case showed that the Muslims who are known for their tolerance had finally stood up.

He hoped that Malaysian authorities would similarly take stern action against politicians who tried to get political mileage and personal gain by playing up religious sensitivities.

“This is to ensure the stability and harmony among our multiracial people. Enough with Ahok. Don’t let it spread into Malaysia,” Awang added. – May 15, 2017.
