Active Covid-19 cases on the rise

ACTIVE Covid-19 cases showed no signs of receding, increased again today to 32,939 from yesterday’s 31,516 reported infections.

The uptrend in active cases began on April 6, with authorities listing 14,161 people with the contagion.

The Ministry of Health also reported 3,744 new Covid-19 cases in the past 24 hours.

Director-general of health Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said the fresh cases have taken the nationwide caseload to 424,376.

Selangor topped the daily tally with 1,548 cases, followed by Kelantan and Sarawak with 480 and 419 cases respectively.

Only seven of today’s cases were imported while the rest were from local transmission.

Meanwhile, the number of patients in critical care topped 300 for the eighth day running, with 328 people in intensive care units nationwide.

Of this number, 185 are on respiratory support, which is the second highest number since the start of the pandemic.

Noor Hisham said 2,304 patients had recovered in the past 24 hours, taking the cumulative total to 389,846.

There were 17 fatalities, which raised the death toll to 1,591. – May 5, 2021.
