SELANGOR Menteri Besar Amirudin Shari has said the state’s priority now is to reduce the Covid-19 infectivity rate, hence the need for the movement control order (MCO).

Amirudin said new cases were traced from shopping malls, schools and Ramadan bazaars.

“It is necessary for the MCO to cover six districts in Selangor because we found that many of the cases occurred in shopping malls, schools, Ramadan bazaars and Hari Raya bazaars.”

“Maybe it is drastic, but we need to flatten the curve and infectivity rate. We may see the result in two to three weeks’ time,” said Amirudin during a press conference today in Shah Alam.

Yesterday, Defence Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob announced the change in status for Hulu Langat, Petaling, Gombak, Klang, Kuala Langat and Sepang starting tomorrow. Kuala Lumpur remains governed by a conditional MCO.

Ismail said the decision to implement the MCO was after the state government presented the proposal to the National Security Council.

“The MCO in the six districts will be from May 6 till May 17.

Under this MCO, inter-district travel will not be allowed, unless for emergency or work.

MCO standard operating procedure for the six districts will apply. This includes continued operations for all food businesses from 6am to midnight, for shops selling daily necessities from 6am to 10pm, and for markets from 6am to 2pm.

The three remaining districts in Selangor – Kuala Selangor, Sabak Bernam and Hulu Selangor – will still be governed by conditional MCO. – May 5, 2021.
