LIEW Chin Tong has retained his position as DAP’s Johor state chairman following an intense party poll that saw his team winning 10 of the 15 committee seats.

The former deputy defence minister came in third in the contest while Bakri lawmaker Yeo Bee Yin topped the poll.

Skudai assemblyman Tan Hong Pin, who was among the dissidents in the state chapter who wanted to oust Liew, did not make the committee after coming in 16th in the contest.

However, Dr Boo Cheng Hau from the dissident camp was re-elected to the state committee.

“If there were flaws in my previous leadership, I will do my best now to rectify them. We will find ways to resolve our differences amicably and get work done. With your support, we will be stronger together.

“The party election has now ended and it is time for us to reconcile and move on. We need to focus on the coming general election as one united team,” he said in a statement.

There were 38 candidates vying for 15 seats in the state line-up.

Under DAP’s two-tier election system, the 15 winners elect office bearers from among themselves.

In the following election for places in the state committee, Liew’s deputy, Teo Nie Ching, retained her post, while Chen Kah Eng replaced Tan as the state secretary.

Among the other office bearers are George Poh Eng Guan (assistant secretary), Gan Peck Cheng (treasurer), Wong Shu Qi (organising secretary), Ho Bao Kheong (assistant organising secretary), Liow Cai Tung (publicity secretary), Marina Ibrahim (assistant publicity secretary) and Tee Boon Tsong (political education director). – May 2, 2021.
