14 new Covid-19 clusters today, 6 linked to education

FOURTEEN new Covid-19 clusters were identified by the Health Ministry in the past 24 hours, with education-related ones dominating the list, said Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah.

The director-general of health said six education-related clusters were traced, with five detected at education institutions and one at a government school. 

Besides this, Noor Hisham said four community-based, three workplaces and one religious clusters were also identified. 

Three clusters each were traced in Kelantan, Sarawak and Johor; two in Kedah, and one each in Sabah, Perak and Selangor. 

Noor Hisham said the Jalan Hospital cluster among students and staffers at a government school in Pasir Mas, Kelantan was the biggest contributor among education-related clusters, with 50 people testing positive for coronavirus. 

Two other education clusters detected in Kelantan were Tangok and Pulai Chondong, which reported 15 and 23 positive cases respectively. 

Other education clusters were Jalan Tagasan in Sabah with six cases, Jalan Medan Aliff in Johor with nine cases and Jalan Weng in Kedah with 11 cases. 

Noor Hisham said among the four community-based clusters, Sarawak alone reported three, with Sg Duan in Mukah district logging the most cases today at 84. 

The other two clusters in the state were Sg Passin (49 cases) and Sg Selitut (18).

The sole community-based cluster traced outside Sarawak was Jalan Bandar University, Perak, which recorded 13 positive cases. 

Besides this, Noor Hisham said that among the three workplace clusters detected, Jalan Sulah 16 traced in Klang Selangor reported the most with 46 cases, followed by Jalan Cahaya Baru in Johor with 20 cases and Cyber Park, also in Johor, with nine cases. 

Bayan Cenderawasih, a religious cluster, reported 10 cases. 

Overall, the 14 clusters reported a total of 363 positive cases.

The addition of today’s clusters bring the total number of virus groupings in the country to 1,534, where 340 are active and 63 of them still reporting new cases. 

Noor Hisham said 12 clusters were brought to an end today, taking the number of clusters to conclude to 1,194. – April 19, 2021.
