Covid-19 cases top 2,000 mark for 5th consecutive day

MALAYSIA continued to log more than 2,000 daily Covid-19 cases for the fifth straight day, recording 2,078 infections in the past 24 hours, said Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah. 

The director-general of health said that with 589 new cases reported, Sarawak remains as the state with most number of daily infections. 

Selangor was second on the chart, recording 457 cases, while Kelantan rounded up the top three with 290 cases reported. 

Cumulatively, Malaysia now has 377,132 active cases.

Noor Hisham said that despite 1,402 people having recovered and discharged from hospitals, active cases today breached the 20,000 mark. 

Active cases stood at 20,522. 

Of them, 228 were admitted in the intensive care unit (ICU), while 93 of them require respiratory assistance. 

Apart from this, Noor Hisham said the nation recorded eight deaths today – all Malaysians, taking the fatalities toll to 1,386.

Three deaths were reported in Sarawak, two each in Selangor and Sabah, and one in Kuala Lumpur. 

Seven of the eight victims had underlying medical conditions, including the youngest victim of the day, aged 35, who had gout and obesity. – April 19, 2021.
