Malaysia exceeds 2,000 cases for a 4th straight day

MALAYSIA recorded 2,195 new Covid-19 cases in the past 24 hours, taking the cumulative number to 375,054, said director-general of health Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah.

This is the fourth straight day the nation has logged more than 2,000 daily cases.

Noor Hisham said Sarawak was back on top of the list of states with most daily infections, with 508 cases. 

Selangor, which recorded the most cases yesterday, dropped to second today, with 431 new cases. 

Johor is back on the top three for the first time since April 7, reporting 387 new cases. 

Terengganu, which reported zero cases yesterday, recorded 16 new cases today. 

All other states in the country also recorded fresh infections.

Noor Hisham said of today’s cases, 10 were imported while the rest were local transmissions.  

Beside this, he said 1,427 people have recuperated and were discharged from hospital, taking total recoveries to 353,822.

He said with the number of new cases outpacing recoveries for the past 11 days, active cases have increased to 19,854.  

Of them, Noor Hisham said 219 were admitted in the intensive care unit, with 90 needing respiratory support. 

Apart from this, the director-general of health said eight fatalities were recorded today – all locals, taking the death toll to 1,378.  

He said two deaths each were reported in Selangor and Kelantan, while one death each was reported in Sarawak, Sabah, Penang and Kuala Lumpur. 

All victims had underlying medical conditions, with the oldest to succumb to the illness today aged 90. – April 18, 2021.
