UMNO president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi has dismissed an audio clip – which supposedly is a conversation between him and opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim – as fake, adding that it was released by people wanting to “undermine and destroy Umno”.

“I am disappointed and shocked about the audio clip, supposedly a conversation between Anwar and me.

“I strongly deny the content of the conversation as per the audio of the recording.

“I had no such conversation with Anwar after the recent Umno general assembly,” he said in a statement today, adding that he was going to lodge a police report about the four-minute audio clip that went viral on social media late yesterday.

In the conversation, voices – supposed to be those of Zahid and Anwar – were discussing the outcome of the recent Umno General Assembly at which the party severed ties with Bersatu and Perikatan Nasional.

The party also resolved not to work with Anwar or DAP in the next elections.

Zahid said the release of the clip was a disgusting political gambit that confirms continuous efforts to undermine and destroy Umno.

“I believe more vile games like this will continue with the aim of undermining and destroying Umno.

“As party president, I will never violate any decision made by the Umno Supreme Council or the general assembly,” he said.

The conversation, alleged to have taken place immediately following the general assembly on March 28, suggested that there was an understanding between Anwar and Zahid to work together politically. – April 7, 2021.
