SARAWAK will propose to Putrajaya two sites at Tapah Megah, on the Sarawak-Kalimantan border in Kapit, as sites for the police’s general operation’s force (GOF) forward operating base and a customs, immigration, and quarantine (CIQ) facility, Deputy Chief Minister James Masing said.
Masing, after an inspection of the area in Kapit today, said the site for the CIQ is 1.5km from the borderline while the PGA base is a further 20km away.
Across the line from the proposed CIQ is the Indonesian town of Long Nawang.
The town has a population of 5,000 and Indonesia has established a post on its side, said Masing, who chairs the state’s border security committee.
He also said a site at Long Singut at Ulu Sg. Baleh, also in the Kapit division, would be proposed as a control post.
Putrajaya has agreed to the establishment of the base, CIQ and control post he said.
“At the next meeting, I will suggest these sites as ways to further strengthen our border security with Indonesia, especially when, in 2026, the Indonesian capital will move to the vicinity of the Mahakam river basin.”
This would also place the Kapit division closer to the new (Indonesian) capital, he added. – April 6, 2021.
