FLASH floods struck some two dozen areas in Penang today, following continuous overnight rain.

Floods were reported in Jalan P. Ramlee, Kg Tomb, Kimberley Expressway, Cecil Expressway, Jalan Sg Ujong, Jalan Magazine, Jalan Mcnair, Jalan Campbell and Jalan Wring Cord, among other places.

The island’s northeast district’s Engineering Department reportedly said Sg Pinang had reached its danger level of 2.53m, while Sg Air Itam was at its alert level of 6.1m.

A high tide level of 2.34m was reported at 2.48am today.

Heavy rain and strong winds in Penang and other states are expected to continue this morning, with the Meteorological Department releasing a thunderstorm warning notice at 5.20am.

Today’s floods come after record rainfall on November 4 and 5 last year that displaced some 5,000 people and caused landslides.

Last month, Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng declared that the state had mostly recovered from the massive floods that struck a month prior.

The state government is expected to call a press conference on the flash floods later today. – January 5, 2018.
