THE cause of a new Covid-19 cluster centring on a wedding in rural Sarawak has been pinpointed to three guests who apparently attended despite being symptomatic of the virus.

To date, 68 people who attended the wedding in Kg Binyu, Tanjung Bako, a rural Malay coastal village just outside Kuching, have contracted the virus, the state disaster management committee said in its latest update today.

The titular Kg Binyu cluster is responsible for pushing Kuching to the top of the localised infections list, with 86 new cases. A total of 231 people have since been screened.

The committee said the three infected people later sought medical treatment at clinics in Kuching and Bintulu, and their movement trail led to the wedding.

The 68 infected people have been admitted into either Sarawak General Hospital in Kuching, Bintulu Hospital, or placed in quarantine at the low-level quarantine centre (PKRC) in Kuching.

There were 290 new cases reported in Sarawak today with one more death, a 50-year-old man from Bintulu. Some 113 people have now died from Covid-19 in the state.

The disaster committee said of the 290, only 63 showed signs of the infection during screening while in quarantine. – April 3, 2021.

  • Testing 48 hours before attending a big event (was it allowed?) would prevent this.
