POLITICAL differences are keeping Sarawak’s main opposition bloc, Pakatan Harapan, with state-based Parti Sarawak Bersatu (PSB) from having any kind of tie ups for the coming state election, Sarawak PH and DAP chief Chong Chieng Jen said today.

He hinted that the differences are wide, saying it was “quite difficult to come to agreement and consensus” at the moment.

The Stampin MP said their failure “to agree on our principal aim and goal of our struggle” are what’s keeping them apart.

“PH’s main struggle and goals are for a more equitable distribution state wealth and resources among the people.

“PSB’s political agenda are still not very clear,” he said of the multiracial party that started in 2014 as United People’s Party and a new home for members of the Sarawak United People’s Party who were sacked following a bitter leadership tussle at its triennial delegate conference earlier that year.

Chong also questioned the party’s financial backers, which he described as “not very clear” in his post-PH meeting media conference in Kuching today.

He said they are “very coloured”.

“Until we can sort out the purpose and the aim and struggle (of PSB) it’s quite difficult to come to (any) agreement and consensus.

“The ultimate aim (is) we have to have some consensus. The first step is we must be clear and certain of our political struggle.”

Chong said while PH is clear of its political struggle, PSB has “not come up with any really clear agenda or purpose of (its) political struggle”.

The state election is widely speculated to be held soon after the state of emergency is lifted on August 1. – April 3, 2021.
