UMNO must hold its party election as soon as possible to end the uncertainty in the party, said Khairy Jamaluddin.

In a Twitter post, the science, technology and innovation minister told the Umno Supreme Council to do the right thing.

“There is only one way to end Umno’s internal problem and that is to have a party election as soon as possible.

“Do not wait until the general election is over. Umno must go into the general election with a clear and strong leadership is backed by the people.

“Do it as soon as possible, do the right thing Supreme Council. We cannot continue like this,” he tweeted.

The tweet comes after the party’s annual assembly, where Umno resolved not to work with Bersatu at the next polls.

Party president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi also demanded its Muafakat Nasional partner PAS choose between the Malay party and its splinter, Bersatu,

Zahid said Umno and PAS had agreed to hold off joining other political coalitions.

“Umno is firm on this. It is not too late to come back to the MN pact. We must be steadfast as (leaving the pact) will not benefit either Umno or PAS.”

A day before, Umno deputy president Mohamad Hasan and Youth chief Aysraf Wajdi Dusuki urged PAS to choose between Bersatu and Umno ahead of GE15.

On Sunday, the Umno 2020 General Assembly unanimously agreed to end cooperation with Bersatu in the coming elections.

According to the resolution, tweeted by secretary-general Ahmad Maslan, the delegates accepted the resolution proposed by the Umno Supreme Council dated February 19.

Yesterday, PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang pleaded to all Malay based parties to stay united.

“The problem we face now is the division among Muslims. PAS wants to bring the unity agenda among Muslims as well as non-Muslims who are not extreme. This is our unity agenda.

“So let’s not be rude to our friends. Instead we must establish a brotherhood and not be the cause of division. Be patient and be a peacemaker,” he said. – March 30, 2021.
