BOUNDARIES of parliamentary constituencies could be changed to benefit Malay-Muslims if PAS and its allies win the next general election with a two-thirds majority, said Mohd Khairuddin Aman Razali.
The PAS central committee member said it would take the cooperation of three Malay parties – PAS, Bersatu and Umno – to turn that dream into a reality.
“PAS sees a long-term need to win the 15th general election with a two-thirds majority.
“That way, the electoral boundary changes that benefit Malay-Muslims, and increasing parliamentary seats in Malay-majority states can be worked out,” the minister of plantation industries and commodities said in a Facebook post.
Based on Article 113 of the Federal Constitution, the Election Commission can only conduct a re-delineation exercise after eight years from the date of the last exercise or if there is a change in the number of parliamentary seats under Article 46.
The eight-year period will end in Sarawak in 2023, 2025 in Sabah and 2026 in Peninsular Malaysia.
The Kuala Nerus MP said the goal of a two-thirds majority can only be achieved if PAS, Bersatu and Umno are involved in straight fights with the opposition parties.
However, ties between Umno and Bersatu have been strained recently.
The Umno Supreme Council, in its last meeting on February 19 in Janda Baik, Pahang, had agreed to cut ties with Bersatu in GE15.
Former Prime Minister Najib Razak said it was always Umno’s stance of supporting Bersatu only until GE15.
PAS deputy president Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man advised leaders from all the parties to continue supporting the current Perikatan Nasional (PN) government, led by Bersatu.
He also said that PAS wishes to continue its political cooperation with Bersatu and Umno until after GE15 for the sake of the country’s future. – March 23, 2021.
