Crane collapses across highway, killing three workers

Three people have been killed and another seriously injured after a crane collapsed at a construction site for the SUKE in Cheras, Kuala Lumpur, this morning. – The Malaysian Insight pic by Seth Akmal, March 22, 2021.

THREE construction workers died and another person was injured after a crane launcher collapsed at a Sungai Besi-Ulu Kelang Elevated Expressway (SUKE) construction site on Persiaran Alam Damai, Cheras, Kuala Lumpur this morning, hitting a vehicle below.

In a statement, Kuala Lumpur Fire and Rescue department confirmed two of the three deaths.

“The two men who died are workers for the highway construction. They were killed instantly after falling from a height of 120ft,” the department said in a statement, adding that the department received the first emergency call at 8.45am.

According to the department, the driver sustained serious injuries as the falling machinery came down on his vehicle, while firefighters were trying to free another person trapped in the debris.

However, in a statement Projek Lintasan Sungei Besi-Ulu Klang Sdn Bhd (Prolintas), the concessionaire developing the SUKE, said the trapped worker had also died.

Prolintas said all three workers were Chinese nationals.

“We confirm the incident that occurred this morning at the SUKE construction site.

“Three workers have died, while another man sustained injuries due to the incident.

“The cause of the accident is still under investigation. An emergency response team from SUKE and the fire and rescue department are currently at the scene,” Prolintas said. – March 22, 2021.
