A RIGHTS group wants a royal commission of inquiry (RCI) to be set up to investigate Abdul Hamid Bador’s claim of an internal conspiracy to oust the inspector-general of police.

Eliminating Deaths and Abuse In Custody Together (EDICT) group said an RCI would serve to identify the cops wishing to seize control of the police force to further their own ends.

“The statement from Abdul Hamid sounded as though he was pleading with the government to take action.

“EDICT believes that this police cabal already has tentacles in every police department so it makes sense to have independent body like an RCI investigate and identify those involved,” said the group .

The top cop yesterday said a group of young officers are behind the plot and they were seeking to gain more control and power over the force.

“There are attempts to humiliate and topple me,” Hamid said on the Sinar Live programme hosted by Johan Jaaffar.

“There are young officers who will meet and talk… and act in such a manner. They talk about how they and their partners can rise in rank to do certain things.”

“I would like to advise them to please stop their outrageous acts. (They) must realise that the police force does not belong to anybody, it is not our playground.”

He admitted he was disturbed by their attacks and hoped they would stop.

“I ask them to please repent now. When they reach the age of 60, I fear they will have no chance to repent. When we leave the force, we will no longer enjoy the protection of the blue uniform.

“We will be in civilian clothing. Nobody will be afraid of us then. At that point, i hope you will not have regrets.”

Hamid spoke about the group after he was asked about the existence of corrupt cops.

EDICT today said the IGP’s revelations showed there was urgent need for the establishment of the Independent Police Complaints & Misconduct Commission (IPCMC).

“In this situation, the government cannot depend on the police to investigate its own as members of this cabal may already have a hold over some departments in the police force.

“If the government continues to act like it does not care, we worry that the country will be ruled by ruthless enforcers in uniform who will threaten the peace,” it said in the statement. –  March 19, 2021.
