Tajuddin warns PAS against supporting Bersatu in Umno seats in GE15

Umno election director Tajuddin Abdul Rahman says PAS should be wary of supporting Bersatu in seats involving his party. – The Malaysian Insight file pic, March 9, 2021.

PAS should not support Bersatu in the next elections in seats involving Umno, said Tajuddin Abdul Rahman.

“If Bersatu wants to contest in Bukit Bintang, they (PAS) can support (Bersatu) because Umno won’t contest in Bukit Bintang. If Bersatu wants to contest in Kepong, go ahead.

“Even if PAS wants to campaign for Bersatu en masse, we have no objections,” said the Pasir Salak MP in a press conference in Kuala Lumpur today.

In the previous election, the Bukit Bintang and Kepong seats were customarily contested by MCA and Gerakan under the Barisan Nasional banner.

But Tajuddin, who is the Umno election director for GE15, warned PAS that there would be a backlash from Umno if the Islamists backed Bersatu against the party.

“If PAS supports Bersatu in Pasir Salak, watch out. I’m warning you,” said the vocal Umno leader.

He said that although Umno favours a situation where PAS and Umno do not clash against one another, the party would not accept PAS supporting Bersatu against Umno.

“Maybe, there can be a formula where they (PAS) can be with Bersatu but not at the expense of Umno. Don’t sabotage us in seats where Umno is contesting.

Umno is expected to clash against Bersatu in the next elections after the party formally told Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin that it will not cooperate with the party in GE15.

One of the main issues for Umno and Bersatu is that 15 out of Bersatu’s 31 seats were won under the Umno banner in GE14.

On top of the seats Bersatu had won from Umno, the party also wants Umno to give up the 15 seats that defected to them after GE14. – March 9, 2021.
