JAMAL Md Yunos has publicly apologised to Yeo Bee Yin as part of his settlement in a defamation suit brought against him by the former energy, science, technology, environment and climate change minister.
The Sg Besar Umno division chief read out the apology from a prepared statement before media personnel at the lobby of the Kuala Lumpur Courts Complex today.
High court judge Rohana Ali Yusof recorded the settlement between parties as conveyed by their lawyers before Jamal read out the apology.
Yeo was not present in court this morning.
On June 14, 2017, Yeo filed the suit seeking compensation from the Sg Besar Umno division chief for issuing a statement over the alleged abuse of Yayasan Warisan Anak Selangor funds.
In the statement of claim, Yeo, who is also Bakri MP, claimed that Jamal had issued a defamatory statement on March 21 the same year, and the statement was published in several newspapers, news portals and on Jamal’s Facebook.
Yeo claimed that Jamal’s statement, among others, gave the impression she had abused public funds for her personal use and painted her as an unethical and unreliable person.
Apart from RM5 million of general damages, Yeo was also seeking compensatory, aggravated and exemplary damages and an injunction to prevent Jamal from repeating his allegations. – March 2, 2021.
