MIC is calling for the arrest and deportation of Zakir Naik following Interpol’s red corner notice (RCN).

MIC treasurer-general S Vell Paari said in a statement that India’s courts had found Zakir and his Islamic Research Foundation (IRF) to be a threat to their country’s security.

“What is more shocking is that India’s investigations revealed Zakir Naik’s link with IS (Islamic State) and the influence of his teachings on suspects involved in a terrorist attack in Bangladesh a few months ago,” he said, adding that this showed that Zakir is also a threat to Malaysia.

“I now call upon the Inspector-General of Police Khalid Abu Bakar and the Royal Malaysian Police Force (PDRM) to arrest Zakir Naik and deport him immediately to India to face Indian authorities,” he said.

The MIC leader said the IGP should also investigate Zakir’s sympathisers as they could be using his teaching to spread IS ideologies and recruit Malaysian members.

He also called the IGP to investigate the people who invited Zakir to Malaysia in the first place and giving Zakir a Malaysian permanent resident status.

He also singled out Perkasa and its president, Ibrahim Ali, saying the Malay rights group must be investigated for protecting and helping the preacher.

He added that Zakir must not be allowed back into Malaysia if he had left the country.

The Malaysian Insight previously reported Zakir had been declared as an international fugitive by Interpol for terrorism activities and money laundering.

In the latest RCN, India’s National Investigation Agency (NIA) alleged that Zakir was spreading hatred with provocative speeches, funding terrorists and money laundering.

He is said to be hiding either in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) or Saudi Arabia and keeps on moving between Malaysia and Indonesia, the republic’s Times of India daily quoted intelligence agencies.

Sources told the daily that the Interpol issued the alert on Zakir after a 10-month long investigation on his group – the Islamic Research Foundation – and Peace TV, which were banned by the Indian government.

During the probe, NIA found 37 properties owned by Zakir and companies run by him, which were estimated to worth millions of ringgit. – May 13, 2017.
