New Covid-19 cases drop below 2,000, recoveries double that

DAILY Covid-19 cases in the country dropped below 2,000 for the first time in almost two months, with the country reporting 1,924 cases in the last 24-hours, said Health Director-General Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah.

Malaysia last reported sub-2,000 cases on January 4 with 1,741 new infections.

Recoveries, meanwhile, came in at almost double the number of new infections today, as 3,752 were discharged in the past day.

Active cases in the country now stand at 28,837, including 205 who are in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU), of which 91 require respiratory support.

Noor Hisham said the country reported 12 fatalities today – all Malaysians – taking the toll to 1,100.

Of the fatalities reported today, nine were in Selangor, two in Sarawak and one in Penang.

All of the victims were aged 50 and above, with the oldest being 91, from Sibu, Sarawak.

All 12 victims had underlying medical conditions, with 11 of them diagnosed with high-blood pressure.

On today’s new infections, Dr Noor Hisham said six were imported, while all the rest were local transmissions.

“Of the 1,918 local transmission cases, 1,543 were Malaysians, while 375 were foreigners.

“Of the six imported cases, two involved locals and the balance four were foreigners,” he said in a statement today.

Selangor again topped other states with the most daily Covid-19 cases at 666, followed by Johor with 257 and Sarawak with 219.

On overall cases by state, Selangor is inching closer to the 100,000 mark, with the most populated state logging 97,484 cumulative cases.

Sabah trails in second place with 52,466 cases, followed by Johor with 35,027. – February 25, 2021.
