7 of 8 new virus clusters linked to workplace

SEVEN of eight new Covid-19 clusters identified today are linked to the workplace, said director-general of health Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah.

Three clusters were reported in Johor, two in Penang and one each in Selangor, Perak and Sabah

The sole non-workplace related cluster was in Sabah, which was traced to a community infection.

Six of the workplace clusters were traced to factories and one was connected to a market.

Noor Hisham said the eight clusters reported a total 213 cases, 195 of them linked to the workplace.

The Lorong Bakau cluster at a factory in Penang contributed the most cases with 50, followed by the Vista Hilir cluster at another Penang factory with 35 cases.

In Johor, the Jalan Ulu Choc cluster linked to a factory in Pontian reported 34 cases; the Perindustrian Lukut cluster at a Kota Tinggi factory, 28 cases; and the Jalan Dato Yunus cluster at a Johor Baru factory, eight cases.

In Perak, the Pasar Bidor cluster in Batang Padang logged 25 cases.

In Selangor, the Jalan Enam cluster in Petaling, reported 15 cases.

In Sabah, the sole community-based cluster dubbed Sinsingon was traced to a funeral in Nabawan. eighteen cases have been reported in connection with the event.

There are now 1,103 clusters in Malaysia, 509 of which are classified active.

Of those active clusters, 78 are still reporting new cases.

Clusters with the highest number of daily cases were Sungai Gadut Industri (1,338), Jalan Segambut construction site (174) and Jalan Pelabuhan (164).

Noor Hisham said the Sungai Gadut Industri workplace cluster, which spans Seremban, Rembau and Tampin – was the main reason for the spike in today’s new cases.
