THE High Court in Shah Alam today rejected a remand application to hold the founder of Sugarbook, a sugar daddy dating platform, while police conducted enquiries.
Lawyer Foong Cheng Leong, representing the suspect, 34, said high Court deputy registrar Noorasyikin Sahat, dismissed the application after his client pledged to give his full co-operation in the investigation.
Selangor CID chief Fadzil Ahmat said the 34-year-old founder of Asia’s largest sugar daddy dating platform, was arrested at the Icon Residence compound in Kuala Lumpur yesterday afternoon.
Fadzil said initial investigations found the man said he was the founder of Sugarbook.
To date, 74 police reports have been lodged about this case.
Sugarbook is a website and mobile app platform established on the concept of “sugar dating”.
The term is loosely used to describe relationships in which financial support is exchanged for romantic companionship, which may or may not involve sexual intercourse.
Last week, Sugarbook, revealed a 40% spike in sign-ups among university students to pay off tuition fees, household and living expenses.
Police initiated investigations into the website after it named 10 public and private universities as having the most students who chose to become “sugar babies” and sought “sugar daddies” to finance their lifestyles.
On Tuesday, the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) blocked the online dating platform after a meeting with Higher Education Minister Noraini Ahmad.
Noraini had said in a Facebook post her ministry and MCMC had agreed to act against the website. – February 18, 2021.
